Shakespeare knew a thing or two about the Human condition and psyche. Perhaps one of the most easily recognisable quotations from Hamlet is uttered by Polonius to his son Laertes, just prior to his leaving to go to university.
‘This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. ‘
The question of One’s relationship to Self is brought into sharp focus, as well as the realisation that unless we have authenticity in our dealings with Self, we are masked Liars; steeped in deception of both ourselves and all those with whom we interact. But how to get at the kernel of Truth?
Like peeling away the layers of an onion, it takes courage to lay bare our deeds and misdeeds in all their glory, bone and guts. To have an honest look and poke about in the mire of ego, attachment, deception and expectation that comprises the over-arching adult programming of this human coil. To look closely at the intentions upon which we paved our roads to Hell, as well as the successes that required the sacrifice of others in order to achieve them. But what then? All the muck and gore is laid before us, and we cringe and wince in fear and self-loathing?
Well, perhaps we do, but the key is at this point to process that distaste through the lens of acceptance. It is what it is at the end of the day. No amount of revisionism will change the past. We can simply take stock of it and change the now. The point of Power is now. ‘To forgive ourselves our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us’; for truly forgiveness is Divine.
From the blank slate of self- forgiveness, we can release the Karma, the guilt, the recrimination, the cheating, the lies and deception and deal with ourselves from the standpoint of Mastery and understanding. Understanding of the depths to which we are capable of delving, but staunch in the determination to do better, be better. It is this striving for Mastery and excellence in thought and word and deed that becomes the hallmark of our enlightenment and our deliverance from the tangled web of deceit.
Then in the new Light of day, in the new now moment, to use the tool of this self-awareness and gnosis to make choices that take us away from situations of hurt and contrast, and instead into authentic joy and interactions of Love and bliss. We free ourselves from the suffering and the reverse narcissistic programming of the ‘ultimate victim’. We step into the new dawn of integrity to self and others and with each step taken upon that road to freedom, we truly ‘canst not be false to any man’.
