First thing I would like to say, is that I am no expert on this subject despite my devotion to meditation. Vedic scholars and Hindu and Buddhist practitioners are far more knowledgable than I. (Forgive me Philippe, if I am not doing this justice!)

I will write about what the function of each chakra is and then later about balancing or opening them.  As I understand it…

We are all energy…in one form or another.  Energy vibrates to frequencies; the lower the frequency of the energy, the denser it is…hence material manifestations or solid forms. The higher the frequency, the less density it manifests…but it is still present, just not in a material form. This I hope gives a potted understanding of those things ‘seen and unseen’.

Chakras are the energy nodes or centres both in our bodies and around us.  There are quite literally thousands of them, but for the purposes of meditation most people focus on the 7 main ones that relate to our physical manifestations in bodies. When I meditate I work with 12 chakras, but I will write more on the ones relating to the unseen in another blog 🙂

These 7 main energy nodes are situated in an ascending line from the base of our spines to the centre just above the top of our heads. Our energy flows through these chakras and around the body. It is when this energy or ‘chi’ becomes blocked through emotional or physical traumas that illnesses manifest themselves.  So the ideal state of being, is to be with energy flowing clearly in an unimpeded manner from the soles of your feet to the top of your head. To achieve this state, frequent meditation is key.

Our breath is the energy of life, and working with your chakras requires you to breathe and use visualisation. I call this meditation. You can sit, lie down, stand on your head…really the body position does not matter, so long as you are comfortable enough to relax completely. A fav for me is to lie on my back with my legs up the wall 😀 Once my body is comfortable, I close my eyes and focus on my breath. I breath deeply in through my nose and slowly out through my mouth. I mentally focus on the act of breathing until I feel completely calm and serene. I usually offer up a prayer and ask for higher protection while I am in an open state.

Then the visualisation comes in. I picture white light entering my body through the souls of my feet and climbing ever higher to touch upon each of the 7 main body chakras until it streams out in a column from the top of my head. Hindus call this kundalini. You will literally feel it flow through your body. The important bit here is to pay attention!  If the light gets blocked at any point and will not rise, then you need to focus on the specific blocked chakra to clear it.

How to focus on each chakra? Each of the chakras has a colour and a sound frequency attached to it. Balancing or opening the chakras depends upon tuning it like a musical instrument so that it releases its blockage or density and again rings in harmony with the energy signature frequency that it should.Humming or singing or listening to the sound frequency corresponding to each chakra, while visualising the corresponding colours really works to clear blockages and open chakras to unimpeded energy flow.

So what is the function of each chakra? Here I am borrowing from a simple layman’s guide from http://www.ask-angels.com.

1- Root Chakra Colour RED Musical note C

Your root chakra is located at the base of your spine, in your pelvic area, and at the center of your body. Your root chakra is your grounding chakra which helps you to stay centered, secure, active, energized and present.

Your root chakra allows Divine energy to flow from the Earth up into the rest of your chakras, and is an important foundation for your entire chakra system. Your root chakra allows you to experience safety and security in your life when balanced.

2- Sacral Chakra Colour Orange Musical note D

Your sacral chakra is your center of creativity and sexuality. Dealing with issues of relationships and how you interact socially, this center is the dwelling place of your Self.
The sacral chakra rules abundance, creativity, wellness, pleasure, and joy. This center also controls passions, sex and pleasure, and brings the lesson of learning to let go.

3- Solar Plexus Colour Yellow Musical note E

The Solar Plexus is your personal power center and it is a storehouse of energy, be it positive, (growth and healing) or negative (pain, fear, and stress).
The solar plexus is your center of will, and it controls issues from the past as well as ambitions and goals for success in the future. This is the center of your personality as a physical being, and it’s state of balance is directly correlated with your sense of willpower, self-acceptance, and your ambition to succeed.

4- Heart Chakra Colour Green Musical note F

Your heart chakra is located in the center of your being and is where the physical and spiritual meet, and where your emotions come into play. The heart controls relationships, and when open, allows you to flow through your relating with others with love and compassion. An open heart chakra allows you to be empathetic to the feelings and emotions of others, while remaining true and in tune with your own.

The heart rules emotional healing, and of course love for self and others, as well as overseeing your appreciation of beauty, and your willingness for compassion. The heart is a sacred portal, which when open allows you, access to the gifts of your higher energetic centers, and in and of itself is the doorway to the realms of angels and Divine love.

5- Throat Chakra Colour Blue Musical note G

Your throat chakra is your communication center, and it is the center of truth, personal expression, listening, responsibility, faith and creativity. Anything dealing with voice (singing, acting, communicating, talking, or listening) is ruled by the throat chakra.

The throat chakra when opened and balanced allows you to speak the truth of Divine Love.

6- Third Eye Chakra Colour Indigo Musical note A

Your third eye chakra is located in the center of your forehead, and is your center of psychic ability. Your third eye also plays a role in your feeling, sensing, and hearing ability. This chakra also connects you energies beyond the physical.

Your third eye chakra regulates the decisions you make, and what you consider to be important. It oversees your dreamtime, and connects you with the subconscious mind and with the higher realms of spirit. Learning, memory, telepathy, clairvoyance, mediumship, aura sensing, are all ruled by the third eye chakra.

7- Crown Chakra Colour Violet Musical note B

Your crown chakra connects you to the higher spiritual realms. It rules your dreams, visions, hopes, and Divine realizations. Spiritual downloads, connection to Spirit, and alignment with your higher purpose are all possible through an awakened and balanced Crown Chakra.

When your crown Chakra is open and you are linked to the infinite light of the Divine above, anything is possible in your life including the fruition of your dreams, a true connection with spirit, and even enlightenment.

Rise higher and shine brighter in unimepeded energy flow dearest ones!
